APM Terminals Lázaro Cárdenas has inaugurated the Phase II expansion of its container terminal and announced the immediate start of Phase III, supported by more than US$350 million in investment.
The expansions aim to strengthen the logistics capacity of the Port of Lázaro Cárdenas and reinforce its strategic role in regional trade.
Phase II, developed with an investment of over US$140 million, increases the terminal’s operational area to 65 hectares and its container handling capacity to 2 million teu, consolidating its position as one of Latin America’s most advanced logistics platforms.
“APM Terminals Lázaro Cárdenas is currently the only terminal in Latin America with a fully automated container yard,” said Beatriz Yera, managing director of APM Terminals Mexico.
“With Phase III, we plan to build an additional 450 metres of berth, reaching 1,200 metres in total, supporting Mexico’s foreign trade growth.”
Phase II includes six electric automated rail-mounted gantry cranes, high-efficiency shuttle carriers and advanced operational control systems. Leo Huisman, regional managing director of APM Terminals Americas, emphasised that the expansion enables sustainable scaling of operations through electrification.
“This terminal will be a pioneer in Mexico, and possibly the region, in operating with renewable energy, supporting decarbonisation in the maritime sector,” he said.
Phase III will accelerate container yard expansion and extend the berth to handle larger vessels, creating approximately 4,000 direct and indirect jobs during construction.
