India has emerged as one of the fastest-growing trading partners for the Port of Hamburg, with container volumes reaching a new record in 2025, cementing the strategic importance of the relationship.
Direct container throughput between Hamburg and India climbed to 290,000 teu in 2025, marking nearly 50% growth compared to the previous year.
The result confirms India’s position as the port’s sixth most important partner country in seaborne container traffic and continues a strong upward trajectory that has seen volumes rise 21% between 2020 and 2024.
“The Port of Hamburg recorded a new volume record of 290,000 teu in direct trade with India in 2025,” said Hendrik Meyn, chief executive of Port of Hamburg Marketing.4
“This represents impressive growth of nearly 50 per cent compared to the previous year and clearly demonstrates the dynamic development of trade with the subcontinent.”
The sustained growth reflects India’s expanding role in global trade flows and Hamburg’s strategic positioning as a European gateway for Indian exports and imports.
The port is currently connected to India by twelve liner services, including six container services, three RoRo services and three conventional general cargo connections handling heavy lift cargo.
Direct links are maintained with key Indian ports including Nhava Sheva, Mundra, Mumbai, Chennai, Ennore and Hazira.
