AV Dawson is investing GB£5 million in a new dry bulk rail terminal at the Port of Middlesbrough, expanding rail freight capacity and strengthening regional supply chain connectivity.
The new terminal, due for completion in spring 2027, will become the fifth rail facility at AV Dawson’s 120-acre logistics hub, enhancing port construction and terminal construction capabilities while supporting UK manufacturers, importers and exporters through improved multimodal port operations.

Additional capacity
The family-owned company, which owns and operates the Port of Middlesbrough on the River Tees, said the investment reinforces its long-term commitment to Teesside while creating additional capacity for the dry bulk market.
The development will strengthen links between road, rail and sea freight, providing regional businesses with greater access to UK and international markets through an integrated supply chain.
Designed specifically to expand rail freight operations, the terminal will increase unloading speeds by 40% to 500 tonnes per hour, improving operational efficiency and throughput.
It will comprise five rail lines, additional rail sidings, a new unloading pit, a bespoke conveyor system and a dedicated storage warehouse, alongside a concrete loading pad offering both indoor and outdoor storage.
The terminal construction project is being delivered with Seymour Construction and Atherton Material Handling. Direct access to the East Coast Main Line, major road links and quayside facilities will enable seamless rail-to-port transhipment.
Once operational, the terminal will handle commodities including fertilisers, aggregates, salt, industrial minerals and energy products, further strengthening the Port of Middlesbrough’s role in supporting regional industry and efficient port operations across domestic and international supply chains.
