The Port of Gothenburg has awarded a contract to Boskalis Sweden for blasting and dredging works under the Skandia Gateway infrastructure project, aimed at increasing capacity for larger vessels.
Valued at approximately SEK 202 million (around €18 million), the contract covers works that will deepen the fairway into Scandinavia’s largest port from the current 13.5 metres to a maximum draught of 17.5 metres. Boskalis was selected following a tender process that attracted five contractors.
“It is a highly competent contractor with solid experience in projects of a similar nature,” said Jan Andersson, project manager for Skandia Gateway at the Port of Gothenburg.
Since spring 2024, the port has been carrying out extensive quay reinforcement works at its container terminal, a necessary step before dredging and blasting can begin. These upgrades form a key part of the port’s contribution to the wider Skandia Gateway project, which is being delivered in collaboration with the Swedish Maritime Administration and the Swedish Transport Administration.
Construction work is scheduled for the next dredging season between October 2026 and March 2027. Once the port’s section is completed, responsibility will pass to the Swedish Maritime Administration to continue dredging outside the port area toward the entrance channel, with those works expected to begin in autumn 2027.
Skandia Gateway is seen as a strategic investment to secure Sweden’s direct access to global shipping routes, as growing vessel sizes increasingly challenge existing infrastructure limits.
