The Suez Canal Container Terminal (SCCT) has completed a major expansion that significantly increases capacity and strengthens East Port Said’s position in global shipping.

The US$500 million upgrade adds 955 metres of quay and more than half a million square metres of new yard space, supported by 12 quay cranes, 30 electric rubber-tyred gantries and over 90 trucks.

SCCT’s expansion boosts capacity, sustainability and jobs, strengthening Port Said’s role in global trade

Annual throughput capacity is expected to rise by 2.2 million teu, bringing the terminal’s total capacity to 7 million teu.

“SCCT provides world-class operations and is a central part of our global network.”

Beyond the operational scale, the project reflects a steady push toward cleaner port operations. The rollout of electric RTGs is part of APM Terminals’ wider strategy to reduce emissions through battery-electric equipment, renewable energy investments and efficiency improvements. The company aims to achieve net zero emissions by 2040.

The expansion is also expected to generate more than 1,000 new jobs, a boost that supports both local employment and broader economic growth around the Suez Canal corridor.

“This expansion will further strengthen Egypt’s and the region’s trade opportunities, and with today’s celebration, we reaffirm our vision and commitment to shaping the future of global trade together,” said SCCT managing director Keld Mosgaard Christensen.

SCCT is one of eight core hub terminals for the east–west network of A. P. Moller–Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd. Investments at the terminal have focused on faster transshipment, improved schedule reliability and digital planning tools such as digital twins.
