Port masterplan

The port masterplan has been developed for Transnet’s Port of Durban, said Public Enterprises Minister, Pravin Gordhan of the South African Government.

Consultation processes are underway, he said. The masterplan will serve as a basis for investment in the port, including port infrastructure, terminals and freight infrastructure.

“Two critical reforms”

“There are two critical reforms that have come to the fore,” said Gordhan.

The first is the establishment of the National Ports Authority (TNPA) as an independent subsidiary of Transnet. “Significant progress has been made in establishing the infrastructure of the subsidiary and the kind of role that it will play in relation to investments in each of the ports in order to facilitate the efficiency of the ports themselves.”

It is anticipated that by October, a further Request for Information (RFI) will be issued by TNPA to establish interest in “the building of the Point Terminal” at the Port of Durban.

The second key reform area is exploring the potential for investment in the port terminals in Durban and ​Ngqura. Two RFIs have been issued by Transnet in respect of this second reform area.

Between now and September, there will be further engagements with interested parties in respect of requests for quotations (RFQs). Between November and January 2022, requests for proposals (RFPs) will be entertained. Bid evaluation will be held in February 2022. Finalisation and approval of bids will take place between March and June 2022.
