CHIAPAS PORT SEEKS MULTI-PURPOSE TERMINAL CONCESSIONAIRE

Mexicos Puerto Madera, also known as Port Chiapas, has issued a tender covering the privatisation of operations at its multi-purpose terminal for a period of five years, although including an option for an extension of a further five years. The terminal has a 151 metre long quay, with alongside draught of nine metres, which will be deepened to 12 metres in future.

Guayaquil, in particular, came in for some serious criticism, with the report noting that it suffered from poor service quality and corruption. Furthermore, there were no integrated policies in place which would resolve these difficulties, nor a suitable legal framework to implement them. The port also suffers from poor telecommunications, road and rail links, a shortage of cranes and a too shallow access channel.

Financial bids were to be opened on October 26, with an award scheduled to be made on November 5.

The new concessionaire will then commence operations on December 10. The winner will be judged on the amount of revenue share they are willing to offer to the port authority. The port has also announced plans to build a cruise terminal, in which SSA has already shown a strong interest in investing.
