Major investment boon for Peru’s ports
In Peru, it will be the ports sector that receives most infrastructure investment in 2019.
Salaverry has already been put out to concession, with concessionaire Transportadora Salaverry to invest $40m in 2019.
State investment body ProInversión is now set to tender terminals in both Chimbote and Marcona. Combined, these require investment of $650m.
In addition to these, facilities in both Callao and Paracas are also undergoing modernisation, as are the regional ports of Ilo and Iquitos.
By offering improved logistics costs, it is hoped that the upgrades will give a much-needed boost to sectors such as mining, industry and agribulk-export.
According to the national port authority Autoridad Portuaria Nacional, 2018 saw records broken for both containers and overall volumes handled, rising respectively by 5% and 4.5%. However, both these figures are expected to be surpassed thanks to even higher traffic this year.
Three new terminals are also planned for Pucallpa, Santa Rosa and Saramiriza.
