Qatar’s Ministry of Transport and Communications has said that the initial operation of Hamad Port’s Container Terminal 2 (CT2) is set to begin in December.
The development of CT2 consists of four phases. Full operation of Phases one and two will start before the end of 2022, taking the port’s capacity to 3m TEUs per year. Phases three and four will be developed later to raise the port’s operational capacity according to local market’s needs.
HE Minister of Transport and Communications, Jassim Saif Ahmed Al-Sulaiti, said: “Announcing the initial operation of CT2 is a new achievement to be added to Hamad Port’s series of previous achievements, thus boosting its huge potential, advanced utilities and modern systems for increasing Qatar’s trade with the world, in addition to improving the country’s competitiveness by transforming it into a regional business hub with sustainable development for the coming generations.”
During development of CT2, technologies based on environmental sustainability and clean energy are being utilised, he added.
The area of Phases one and two of CT2 is 380,000sqm. QTerminals manages and operates Phase one.
Green equipment
Phase one of CT2 has been equipped with three STS quay cranes. Four more cranes will be added during 2021. There are also 12 battery hybrid RTGs. 14 more will be added during 2021.
The terminal has 22 Gaussin 100% electric APM 75T HE terminal tractors equipped with advanced batteries. The zero-emission machines also produce minimal noise.
CT2 has also four empty container handlers (ECH) and 24 trailers.
