Project launch for NOSTRA
The Network of STRAits (NOSTRA) project, which aims to analyse cross-border governance methods and ability to respond to the preservation of biodiversity and natural heritage, has been officially launched.
A conference launching the project took place in Wimille, Pas-de-Calais, last week. The NOSTRA project constitutes the first achievement of the European Straits Initiative led by the Conseil Général du Pas-de-Calais and the UK’s Kent County Council.
During the conference called: Cross-border governance of straits: a solution to preserve biodiversity and natural heritage, political representatives for each of the partners signed an agreement for the implementation of the project.
Fifteen local authorities which border eight of Europe’s straits – including the Gulf of Finland and the Strait of Sicily – will all be working together in future to obtain recognition of European bodies and encourage the development of cooperation projects.
Over the next three years, a series of meetings will be held in each of the straits with the aim of sharing best practice.
The project is 75% financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) via the INTERREG IVC programme – it is one of only 89 successful projects approved out of 355 submissions.
