Last year saw record container volumes shipped at the Port of Mobile in Alabama, US.
Throughout 2022 volumes were up 11% with 563,191 teu handled, the ninth year of double-digit growth since 2009.
Intermodal rail volumes continued a 31-month record of triple-digit growth, ending the year up 142% compared with 2021 and the container terminal handled a record 312 vessels, an increase of 75 vessels from the previous year.
“Time and again, we are showing that shipping through Mobile is an efficient and cost-effective way for businesses to get their goods into or out of the United States,” said Alabama Port Authority director and chief executive John C. Driscoll.
The port is set to expand capabilities to one million teu when the Phase IV expansion at the container terminal completes. In addition to this and a harbour deepening and widening project, beginning in 2025 the Alabama Port Authority plans to develop logistics facilities in Mobile and open a new inland intermodal facility served by CSX in Montgomery, Ala.
Also in the pipeline are a new fly-over bridge to create on-dock rail access at the container terminal, a project to modernise general cargo piers, and an inland intermodal facility in North Alabama.
Strategically located on the Gulf of Mexico, a recent report showed that the port is responsible for US$85 billion in annual economic impact and generates 312,896 jobs across the State of Alabama.
