Essar wins bid for Haldia LNG terminal

India’s Essar Group has apparently won a bid to set up a 1 million tonne LNG terminal at Haldia port in West Bengal.

The winning tender comes on the back of the invitation for bids sent out earlier this year by Haldia Dock Complex.

Media reports said that the bid was won by Essar Ports Ltd and the consortium of Ultra LNG and Essar Shipping Ltd and will include the two-year build and operation of the terminal over the next 30 years.

The LNG terminal will be equipped with storage and distribution facilities and will cost in excess of Rs 450 crore.

Because Haldia is a low-draft river port, the 1 MT terminal will serve as a daughter facility to sea port-based LNG terminals.

Essar Ports has previously announced plans to set up a floating storage and re-gasification unit (FSRU) at Hazira in Gujarat at a cost of around Rs 3,500.

The group currently has a cargo handling capacity of 140 MMTPA which it plans to expand to 194 MMTPA over the next few years.

Its five operational port terminals are at Hazira, Vadinar, Paradip, Salaya and Vizag Iron Ore, which are estimated to handle approximately 90 MMT of cargo during 2017.
