Bilbao PortLab, the innovation hub of the Port of Bilbao, has hosted the final demonstrations of two projects backed by the pre-commercial programme of the Ports 4.0 initiative led by Puertos del Estado.
The port has committed to supporting eleven new projects through the third call of Spain’s Ports 4.0 programme, reinforcing its role as a real-world testing ground for advanced logistics and maritime technologies.

The two showcased initiatives addressed critical environmental and security challenges within port operations.
The first, developed by Alfariver, focused on the creation of an on-site pollution detection system capable of identifying contaminants in port waters in real time. The portable solution combines Raman spectroscopy with amplifying nanoparticles, enabling detection of pollutants at very low concentrations.
An integrated comparison algorithm supports the identification of potential spill sources, strengthening environmental monitoring and regulatory response. Validation was carried out under operational conditions with support from the port authority’s Health, Safety and Environment Department.
The second project, the GLOBAL SAFETY & SECURITY CENTER (GSSC), was developed by RKL – Riskless Integral, Bárbara and Keynetic Technologies. It introduced an integrated, automated and predictive security management platform for logistics and port environments.
Using artificial intelligence, machine learning and IoT-enabled real-time data capture, the system enhances incident anticipation, process automation and secure communications. The solution was tested in two live port environments with backing from the port’s Health, Safety and Environment and Digital Transformation teams, and included the evolution of SECUREPORT software into a fully online platform.
