Fundación Valenciaport has successfully wrapped up its involvement in DT4GS (Digital Twin for Green Shipping), a major European initiative funded by the Horizon Europe programme.

The 36-month project brought together 21 partners from 10 countries to accelerate the decarbonisation of maritime transport using digital twin technology.

Fundación Valenciaport has advanced green shipping by validating digital twin solutions during the DT4GS project

Fundación Valenciaport led the creation of Living Labs, experimental spaces that tested real-world applications in collaboration with shipping firms including Euronav, Danaos, Baleària and Star Bulk. These labs played a central role in validating advanced digital models to enhance ship performance through factors like weather conditions, hull efficiency and engine performance.

One of the project’s key breakthroughs was the validation of the just-in-time arrivals concept. By synchronising digital ship twins with port platforms, this approach demonstrated significant reductions in fuel use, emissions and port waiting times, leading to improved energy efficiency and operational performance.

DT4GS also leaves behind the major technical legacy of an open, transferable digital twin infrastructure with over 30 models publicly accessible via the online library at models.dt4gs.eu. This resource enables maritime stakeholders to replicate and customise solutions to their needs.

Looking ahead, the launch of the DGS Alliance aims to promote digital technology adoption in shipping, support industry collaboration and advance sustainability and regulatory compliance.
